Metaphorically "plowing to reach heaven", the danbata is a terraced field made by piling up stones on a steep hillside.
Its majestic scenery is designated as one of the nation's Important Cultural Landscapes as well as one of the 100 most Beautiful Japanese Village Landscapes. It conjures up images of stairs leading up to heaven when you look at it from the bottom.
